CONTINENTAL METHODS OF BREEDING ROLLERS PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 21 February 2009

When breeding Roller canaries it should be the aim of every Roller fancier to raise good birds.  There are those who breed for quality and others are only interested in quantity.  What is the best procedure to attain success?  There are varied views on the matter and every fancier has his own methods.
Some adopt the stock bird principle.  By this I should explain that such fanciers consider the mating of a first class cock with a hen that is herself related to a winner, to be mistaken idea.

ROLLER CANARY TEAM HARMONY PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 20 December 2008

An understanding of the word team will make it easier to learn the function of each of the four birds composing the team.
A well-matched team is another term that is used in classifying Rollers of distinction.  Without a doubt, a team of Rollers without team harmony can be scored too highly.
For hobbyist who is determined to bench a fine team in the coming show season, you should use these mentioned guidelines:
Strain is the answer, similarly of tone, song direction of each bird, and the tours that should be sung within the strain.  The number of tours a team sings is of no consequence if the tone is valueless.

THE FORMATION OF A STRAIN OF ROLLER CANARIES PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 December 2008

Translated and reprinted from “Canaria” the official bulletin of the Royal Society of Belgium for Roller Canary. G. Geo

In writing this article on the breeding of Roller canaries I particularly write for those who are interested in research, for those who are prepared to study the birds, those who are interested enough to further our fancy.  I would like to commence by saying that I made many mistakes in the past, I have, I hope I learned from them, and you, I am sure may be spared them.

How's breeding going? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 June 2008

My breeding season started early this year and getting better day after day.  Every clutch that hatched in May and after is a big one 3+ babies. April was not that good, mostly 2 babies.  Finally, I did happen to find my best hen.  Of course, since she is so friendly and you can pet her at any time, on the nest or off the nest my wife calls her "my bird".  It is hard to believe but that same hen "hen 087" likes my wife more than me for some reason.  We both take care of our birds on daily bases and really look after them like our own children.

HONEY PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 04 April 2008

Honey has been used as food for hundreds of years.  Roman soldiers used it on their long journeys into far off lands of conquest. It also claims its virility in some parts of the world.  A few years ago there was an article on feeding honey meal to cattle by a diary farmer in New Jersey.   The milk from the cows was fed to his leghorn hens.  The hens produced eggs weighing 32 ounces to the dozen.

Why so much love for hens PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 29 February 2008

There is one thing for sure, not all breeders appreciate hen canaries.  Do not agree with this and personally think that hens should get more love and care than males.  Yes, we are happy to have good results from shows and everyone likes to win a prize but thanks to whom?  Already know the answer… Yes HENS. If sons win a prize (trophy or ribbon) it gets attached to hens flight cage.
